I’m Paul Cronley, the proud owner of Merlin Productions LLC.
I look forward to sharing my story. I hope that you will enjoy getting to know me better.
My interest in filmmaking began at a young age. During my high school years, I would shoot 16mm films for the school football team and then quickly took to video making when home video cameras and decks became popular in the market.
With the help of regular practice, I began producing local recruitment videos for schools and hospitals. My success with these films, helped me get recognized as a preferred director of videography (DP) among some of the local production houses. Soon they started giving me contracts to shoot their videos too. I launched my career from there and moved on to work for national crewing agencies, larger local houses and national television, and high-end corporate communications.
Over my thirty years in the production business, I’ve noticed the video acquisition business change dramatically. When I first joined this field, if you had a BetacamSP package, you were king of the hill. However, it would cost roughly $100,000 to get a camera, lighting, and audio package plus accessories. Now everyone has an $800 HD 4K rectangle in their pocket and somehow miraculously just about everyone on the planet has become a media producer. At the same time, today, quality is not as important as it used to be.
Despite these changes, I’ve learned to adapt to modern demands. Moreover, I like working with different people and new challenges.
To maintain high-quality production, my philosophy is to do the best I can with what I am given to work with. This especially helps when clients don’t know exactly what they want. In these situations, we have to understand their goals, step up as professionals, and help them achieve their immediate targets. Besides, these are the times when our experience and expertise come into play.
As a professional, I have managed to stay successful by showing up to a job with the right attitude, the right gear, and most importantly, sufficient experience.
The most rewarding part of being a video producer is client appreciation. When a client contacts us after a shoot and lets us know that our footage worked out well for their project, it’s extremely gratifying.
With the exception of video production, I am also passionate about beekeeping. During my downtime, I am an avid musician and a cooking enthusiast. However, apart from all these hobbies, I find that I best enjoy spending my free time with my wife and children!
A personal cause I strongly believe in and work towards eliminating is global warming. I feel that climate change is taking a toll on us all, and it’s time we started paying attention to the preservation of our natural environment.
